While no one on vacation wants to go to a mall, sometimes you just gotta - and there are people that actually come to live in Merida for a few months at a time so...

Opened in 1994, the Gran Plaza was a collection of upscale (for Merida) stores and shops, anchored by the Mexican grocery chain Comercial Mexicana on one end and a large Sears store on the other. A recent expansion in 2004/05 doubled the mall's size and introduced some really heavy hitters to Merida's fashion-starved populace. From the international Zara, Nine West and Lacoste to Mexican giants Mixup (music and videos) and Sanborns (Denny's type cafeteria restaurant), the mall now offers just about everything you could possibly need.

Other services include a branch office of TelCel, the Mexico-wide cell phone company, Banamex and HSBC banks, an office of the CFE (electricity monopoly) as well as sporting goods, computer, jewlery, shoes, watches etc.

Located at the end of the Prolongacion del Paseo de Montejo, you can drive there yourself or take the TuriBus (double decker tourist bus) that leaves from downtown and loops around to the Gran Plaza and back - you can get off and on the bus all day.
