A famous prison can be found in Sighetu-Marmatiei, now turned into a museum. Many victims of the Communist regime had been incarcereted and tortured there, some to their death. Political prisoners as well as simple peasants who opposed the collectivisation of their land, Greek Catholic priests, or fascists found themselves imprisoned there athrough the late 40s, the 50s, the 60s and the 70s.
You can also visit Elie Wiesel's Memorial House. Elie Wiesel was a Holocaust survivor who won the Nobel Prize for Peace. His blue house still stands on Dragos Voda Street.
You can visit the very old and famous Jewish cemetery. The Reformed church is the big yellow church from the center of the town which has walls dating from the 8th century.
You can find accomodation at several hotels and motels in the center of and outside the town.
You can find touristic information about guest houses from the villages around Sighet in the center of the town near the artificial fountain.
