Description of Rudesheim

Since the beginning of the nineteenth century Rudesheim has been an attraction
for English and German poets alike, and is today, considering the modest number of residents one of the most visited towns in the country.

Historical landmarks, such as the Klunkhardshof, the fortified Adler Tower, the thousand-year old Broemser castle and the ruins of the Ehrenfels Castle invite you to linger. Those seeking peace and tranquillity will find it in the extensive forests of the nature park Rhein-Taunus, in the natural beauty of the vineyards, or in the hidden alleyways of the town.

From the vantage points of the Niederwald, the visitor can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Rhine valley with the Nahe river estuary and the beautiful uniformity of the steep vineyards. Talking of wine: enjoy the superb Ruedesheimer Riesling, together with music and dancing, in the Drosselgasse or in the numerous inns, wine bars and taverns.

Eibingen (District of)
More than a thousand years old, the history of this pleasant little wine- growing
village is closely connected to Hildegard of Bingen, who founded a monastery here in 1165. The Catholic parish church now stands on its foundations, where her relics are still kept in a precious shrine. Named after her, the present Benedictine abbey was built at the beginning of this century and dominates the town where cosy inns, guesthouses and wine bars offer you their hospitality.

Windeck (District of)
Nestling among the woodlands and vineyards, The Windeck rises to an altitude of 250 to 300 metres, with a panoramic view over the Rheingau. Holidaymakers seeking absolute peace and quiet, who enjoy hiking in the forests and vineyards can relax in the many country inns, private rooms and apartments. The Rudesheim town centre
is a half-hour away on foot.

Assmannshausen / Rhine (City of)
On the most romantic part of the Rhine river where the Rhine valley scenery is most impressive, lays the historical wine-growing village of Assmannshausen with its narrow streets and picturesque houses with pointed gables.

Not only the mighty Rhine dominates the landscape, but also the impressive Rheinstein Castle on the opposite side, the woodlands of the Taunus range, and the hanging slopes of colourful vineyards.

First mentioned in 1108, Assmannshausen has since then been primarily connected with wine-growing, and over the last two centuries has developed as a holiday resort offering a whole variety of activities. Nature-lovers feel just as much at home here as do gourmets in the quality restaurants and cosy wine taverns with romantic terraces tempt the visitor to taste the Red Burgundy of Assmannshausen, one of the most famous German red wines.

Aulhausen (City of)
Two kilometres inland from Assmannshausen, set among rolling fields and dense woods, is another wine-growing town named Aulhausen, an ideal starting point for the many well-signposted hiking routes through the nature park Rhein-Taunus, offering beautiful views across the vineyards and over the wooded hilltops down to the Rhine valley.

With the Niederwald monument close by, families are well catered for with various leisure activities such as pony and coach riding during the day and to make it complete a visit to one of the homely inns and taverns in the evening.

Presberg (City of)
Twelve kilometres to the north-west is situated on a plateau 450meter above Rudesheim and is its highest suburb. Surrounded by beautiful valleys and green hills, with an unbroken view over the Taunus and Hunsrueck ranges it is a paradise for nature lovers and the well-marked nature trails invite you to discover the area. In winter the ski cross country tracks are clearly laid out.
