The departement of the Hautes-Pyrenees, or High Pyrenees offers just that - lots of high mountains. In winter it's great for skiing, with a sun a bit hotter than in the Alpes and snow just as white. In summer it's great for hiking and other outdoor activities. The Pic du Midi is the highest mountain, with great trekking and skiing opportunities. Other famous resorts include Luz Ardiden and Val Louron.
