Palawan is 500 km southwest of Manila. The capital of Palawan is Puerto Princessa, here is also a cute airport. If you drive ca 100 km north by main road and then 50 km west (this trip takes appr 3-4 hours), you will find yourself in Port Barton village. If you want to be secluded from the civil world, this is the place to be. I loved the village! The electricity is there only from 6-11PM, but I havn't seen more happy people. We stayed in Greenviews resort www.palawandg.clara.net, I would highly recommend this place due to fiendly staff and the beauty around the place.

If you are keen on wreck diving be sure to visit Busuanga island north of El Nido. In the midst of the second World War the American army decided to heavily damage the Japanese Imperial supply lines, which they did in the bay of Busuanga island. Nowadays a dozen or so of Japanese warships and supply ships litter the seabottom in this bay. All these ships are accesible to wreckdivers, an absolute must as far as I am concerned. Whilst in this particular area (Busuanga island) don't miss out on the stunning lakes on Coron island, which lies right next to Busuanga. Don't forget to bring insect repellent when visiting the Coron lakes!

Furthermore the island of Palawan remains a tropical paradise, it's rather cheap, lush, densely populated and lacks the effects of mass-tourism. For me it was only possible to take money out of the ATM in Puerto princesa (Palawan's capital), so when travelling from Puerto Princesa up North don't forget to stock cash. Palawan is a last frontier, especially for people that don't like meeting heeps of backpackers/ other tourists.
