Onstwedde is a place about 30 kilometers south-east of Groningen. It is more than 1100 years old. It was called Uneswido at that time, and can be found in old documents.
It is famous for its 'Juffertoren', a tower, and the church to which it is connected. The Juffertoren is about 700 years old, and was built by one of three sisters, who after a life of luxury and pleasure wanted to do something for her salvation.
The church is about 500 years old. It is dedicated to St. Nicholas. It contains a very specuial font of Bentheimer sandstone. After the reformation it was removed from the church, being a symbol of Roman Catholicism. It was used for feeding cattle. But in 1989 it was replaced in the church.
