There is a large public pier that extends well out into the Pacific Ocean. The pier is free. You can fish off the pier or stroll out to the end for ice cream at the restuarant perched on the end. Along the way, you are likely to see an interesting assortment of fresh fish caught by the people fishing. You may also see seals or dolphins swimming nearby.
Oceanside is also the main entrance to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The base encompasses approximately 17 miles of the Pacific coastline. Camp Pendleton is home to the 25,000 Marines that make up the First Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), including the First Marine Division.
There is also an AMTRAK station and a commuter train station in Oceanside.
