The Altstadt (Old City) is a medieval walled city with large pedestrian walkways graced by the pretty Pegnitz River. Spend the afternoon strolling the narrow streets and alleys shopping for antiques toys crafts and jewelry. At Christmastime the citys main market turns into the famous Christkindlmarkt an open-air Christmas Market that has spawned imitators throughout Germany. The main attractions are gluhwein (warm spiced wine) and lebkuchen (similar to gingerbread). Visit the citys three churches (Frauenkirche St. Lorenze Kirche and St. Sebaldus Kirche) and the Albrecht Durer House where the artist lived for 20 years.
