Just 15 minutes from downtown Auckland, North Shore City is a lovely place to escape to for a relaxing day out of the city. Although not bursting for things for tourists to do, it does have some note-worthy attractions.

The beaches here are beautiful and are some of the best in Auckland, and there are so many to chose from. Long Bay beach is one of the most popular. Located at the very north of the city, this beach stretches for a few kilometers and is always packed during the summer. Behind the beach is a protected reserve which is very popular for bbq's and is great for playing little sports games. As with all North Shore beaches, Long Bay is relatively safe.

Lake Pupuke is also beautiful in the summertime. This lake, naturally formed in a volcanic cone, is surrounded by beautiful homes. At Killarney Park you can throw down a blanket, have a picnic and dive off the wharf. The lake is very popular for optimist sailing, canoeing and diving. Watch out for the geese and swans - they're pretty but can get grumpy! The Pumphouse theatre is located right next to the lake and often has good shows, plays and concerts.

Shopping malls are located in Glenfield and Takapuna, and a cheap out-let centre has recently opened in Northcote. Although not huge by international standards, the malls are good and most have everything you may need.

The Glenfield Pools are fun on a rainy day. There is normal pool for swimming, hydro-slides and diving boards at various heights - the highest is 10m.

To get to 'The Shore' jump on any Stagecoach bus outside The Civic (Queen Street) or Ministry of Justice (Albert Street).
