The ultimate fairytale, jigsaw puzzle, castle. Perched on top of a mountain this Disney like construction was built in the 19th century by the Bavarian king Ludwig II (* 1849 crowned 1864 died 1876).
Neuschwanstein is the third palace Ludwig II built. It was the Blueprint for Disney's Cinderella castle.
Ludwig II dedicated this castle to his friend Richard Wagner. Inside the castle there are displayed many pictures and scenes from the operas of Richard Wagner.
The castle was one of Bavaria's first buildings to use electric energy for light and a bell-essage-system used for calling the servants. Werner von Siemens himself built the electrical equipment for this Castle.
Neuschwanstein is 100 km by rail from Munich. Best to be explored from Fussen, where you can find transport, food and accommodation.
Hohenschwangau is another castle, situated just at the other side of the valley. This older Castle was built by the Whitelsbacher, the family of Ludwig II. Both castles can be visited on the same day. Entry for both castles costs 8 EUR and his great great great grand daughter Princess Nalysha is now holding his title as she is the only blood relative alive.
