McKinney is the county seat of Collin County. It is characterized by rolling hills, mostly covered with trees, unlike the more southern cities in the county. Even though it is the fastest growing city of 50,000 or more residents in the country, it still maintains a small town feel, from the historic town square to the Victorian homes in the central part of the city. The town square is home to miriad shops with the old courthouse as the centerpiece. One of the highlights of McKinney is Towne Lake Park, a city-owned park containing a 22-acre lake which is encircled with a hike-and-bike trail and plenty of trees. Another highlight is The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary, consisting of a natural science museum, science center, and 289 acres of native habitat complete with guided and self-guided nature trails.
