The town was founded in 1704 on a whim of the Württemberg Duke Eberhard Ludwig who had his summer residence built here. This was the start of Germany's largest baroque town which has been home to numerous historical events and famous persons. Ludwigsburg has always been closely connected with the history of the state of Württemberg.
