An ambitious hike to the top of Mount Makiling passes the hot waters of mud springs and dense virgin rain forest. Though home of the King Cobra you are much more likely to come in contact with small land leeches that patiently wait for passing flesh.

Los Banos is home of the International Rice Research Institute and a branch of the Univeristy of the Philippines. Hence the thriving population of students, academics and some foreigners help to maintain a lively and well-serviced town.

The botanic gardens are worth a visit and don't forget to try the local buko pie.
