Apparently Loja is an unjustly overlooked town. It's one of Ecuadors oldest cities and a modern town with a rich cultural heritage. It is also close to the Podocarpus National Park, home to unique cloud forests and paramos. Head south to the multicultural little village of Vilcabamba or east to Zamora to visit the Park. Little visited by tourists, it is at the start of an alternative route from Ecuador to Peru, which leads you to JaƩn. There you get to choose between going to the jungle of Iquitos or the Pacific in Chiclayo on the 'Northern Pacific to Amazon crossing'. One of the reasons this border crossing is little used, is that it takes a hell of a lot of time. However word is that it's worth it.
