Lebanon is the seat of Boone County, situated about 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis in central Indiana.

Lebanon is the seat of Boone County, situated about 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis in central Indiana.

The population is estimated at 14,380. The community was named for a grove of hickory trees that reminded pioneer founders of the Biblical cedars of Lebanon.

Major festivals include a lavish week-long Independence Day celebration and the annual Boone County 4-H Fair. The fairgrounds at the south end of the city is the site of numerous events each year, inclulding motorcycle rallies, Good Sam gatherings and an American Indian pow wow.

The centerpiece of Lebanon is the Boone County Courthouse, a stately limestone structure that features a stained glass dome and three-story rotunda. A huge Bicentennial Quilt, created to mark the nation's 200th birthday in 1976, hangs in the rotunda.

The city has two newspapers - the long-established Reporter and a recent start-up, The Daily Sun - and an FM radio station.
