If you were to ask someone where Lake Burton is, they probably wouldn't be able to tell you. Although it is located in Georgia, most Georgians have never even heard of it. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the northeastern part of the state, the 2,700 acre lake owned by Georgia Power sits nestled among some of the most beautiful scenery in Georgia. When the valley was first flooded in 1925 to create the magnificent lake, there was nothing in the deep valley but a little town called Burton, which the lake was later named for. Georgia Power intended on using it to produce hydroelectric power, which it still does to this day, however since 1925 the lake has become much more than just a flooded town and power plant; it has become part of people's lives, full of rich traditions and unforgettable characters and places.
