Kinderdijk is a region located south west of Rotterdam famous for the high concentration of windmills and for being a UNESCO heritage site. Here you can find a few dozens of windmills built between XVI and the XVIII century that were used to dry polders.
Nowadays polders are kept dry by electrical pumps, even if windmills can be still activated in emercengy cases.
From April till October you can visit one of those windmills and get an idea of how they worked.
A curiosity: the oldest windmill, which dated back to the XVI century burnt in 1999 and was then rebuilt exactly as it was. You can easily recognise it because its shape is different from all the other ones.
