The historical record shows that around the 7th century a Muslim saint was shipwrecked on the island of Amini. The inhabitants were converted to Islam despite initial opposition. Kavaratti is dotted with 52 mosques of which the Ujra mosque is most outstanding. The entrance presents a perspective of flowing lines, sinuous scrolls and pillars with floral embellishments - all this carved out a piece of driftwood washed ashore! A well in the precincts is said to have waters with curativel powers.

Kavaratti also boasts an aquarium and a museum. Facilities for swimming, kayaking, water-skiing, snorkeling and sailing are available for visitors.
