Kailua is a small community located on the windward side of O'ahu featuring a suprisingly complete (for it's size) complement of restaurants, and some shopping. Kailua's main attraction is the world-famous Kailua Beach park, consistently rated as one of the best beaches in the United States and the world in general.
There are a few bed and breakfasts in Kailua, and a number of vacation rentals (most of the vacation rentals/timeshares on Oahu are located in Kailua). There are no hotels or motels in Kailua. Kailua is approximately a half-hour drive from urban Honolulu over the scenic Pali Hwy., about 45 minutes or so from Waikiki. Kailua is also accessable by bus from Waikiki and central Honolulu via TheBus Route 56 and 57. If you are coming bus bus, Kailua Beach park is about a 1 mile walk from the town center, there is a bus that goes from the town center (where the 56 or 57 will drop you off) to the beach but it comes infrequentrly (about every 60-90 minutes) so you might find it faster to walk. Taxis do serve Kailua for getting around town, but they are few and far between, when calling for a cab by phone there is usually a 20 minute or more wait (as the taxis usually have to go out of the way coming from Honolulu or Kaneohe to pick you up).
