Gladstone is an industrial port city about 6 hours drive north of Brisbane. It is a good entry point to the southern end of the great barrier reef which extends about 1000 kilometers all the way up to Cairns. Check out the Marina and hit the pubs at night. Its worth a look if your travelling north.

A nice place to spend a couple of hours is the Tondoon Botanic Gardens, on the southern outskirts of the city; there's a kiosk, picnic tables and a children's playground.
