The capital of Fujian province goes back more than 2000 years. Halfway the 19-th century the city was opened up for foreign trade and many British and American dockyards were esteblished here. The city is noted for its hot springs.
The main sights can be seen in one day. Gushan is a big hill in the eastern suburbs. The Yongquan Shi Temple is more than 1000 years old and has a white jade buddha statue. Other interesting temples include the Baita temple on the west side of the Yushan hill and the Wuta at the base of Wushi Hill, both in the centre of town.
