Erfurt is the capital city of the federal state of Turingia in Germany. It is placed almost at the geographical center of the country and it is known as one of the german cities that survived best the bombing raids during world war two. The town has a beautiful and always crowded market place where you can buy craftmanship, typicall food, grocery, and a lot more. There you can find the dominat building of this city, the cathedral or Dom. Although not well known by most tourists, Erfurt is a city that should not be missed on a tour of Germany.  Travelers foucusing their time on the more 'touristy' sights of Bavaria, will be rewarded by heading east after landing in Frankfurt BEFORE they head south.  Erfurt is a truly German city with a large area in the center of town where only foot traffic is allowed (the 'Fussgaengerzone').  The city is how it has been for many years and is not trying to put on a show for tourist money.  Walking through this area, travelers are rewarded with strolls down narrow cobblestone streets with small shops, bakeries, and street venders.  Walk the streets where Martin Luther studied at the University, grab some Italian ice cream and then jump into a used CD store with rare CDs and bootlegs galore.  In Erfurt, it's all there. 

The state of Thuringen is famous for their bratwurst.  Don't miss the chance to get a Thueringerbratwurst from a street vender.  Sit down on the bridge by the water mill and enjoy a foot-long wurst with spicy brown mustard in a small, but delicious roll (Broetschen).  It's about as much happiness as $3 can buy.

The architecture of this town evokes its medieval origins. Almost all monuments and old constructions are well preserved. There is a bridge with houses built on it, that its worth to visit. The city is full of small romantic streets with hidden stores and small restaurants.

The public transportation system relies on electrified streetrailways (Strassenbahn). They drive almost through the entire city and are very safe. If you want to stay in Erfurt for a week or more it is convenient for you to buy a week ticket for your transportation in this mean.

The city is very safe as almost every german or european big town can be.  The people could seem not very friendly to you at first sight, but once you have asked them something, or requested them a specific information about the city in a friendly way of course, they always answer you in a kind way.  Erfurters are very proud of their magnificient city and its heritage.  Once you go there, you will understand why.  English is widely spoken.
