Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 12,732 people, 5,572 households, and 3,259 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,234.5/km² (5,787.0/mi²). There are 5,676 housing units at an average density of 996.1/km² (2,579.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.10% White, 0.80% African American, 0.34% Native American, 1.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,572 households out of which 25.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the city the population is spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 34.8% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.

In the 1940's and 1950's, Clawson was a stronghold for white racist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. Today, Clawson remains one of the least racially-integrated cities in Oakland County.
