This pleasant mid-size town in south central Pennsylvania (just west of Harrisburg ) is home to the U.S. Army War College and Dickinson College . Jim Thorp, noted Native American athlete, trained here. The USAWC post/campus was the site of the government's ' Indian School ' in the early 20th century. The post also contains the Hessian Guard House, a building that housed Hessian mercenaries during the Revolutionary War. Carlisle is also known for its blue ribbon trout stream the Letort. This stream is considered one of the homes of American fly fishing. The Letort is classic Pennsylvania limestone water which requires a very stealthy fishing approach.
Gettysburg , the Cumberland Mountains (part of the Appalachians ) and the Amish country in Lancaster County are all within a short drive from Carlisle .
