Bergerac, whose name has been made famous throughout the world by Cyrano (who was not a Gascon but a true Parisian as it happens!)is the second largest town in the 'département'. Situated on the banks of the Dordogne it used to be a very important port controlling the traffic between the Auvergne and Bordeaux.
The old town, particularly the Tobacco & local history Museum (situated in Henri IV's Peyrarède House) and the river transport Museum are very interesting.
