The Barossa Valley is the largest & best developed Wine region in South Australia. SA produces 60% of Australia's wine & this district has a hand in it all in some way.

It comprises three main towns Tanunda, Nuriootpa & Angaston. Subsidiary villages included Greenock, Bethany, Light Pass, Stockwell, Seppeltsfield, Truro, Kapunda, Rowland Flat & Lyndoch.

Some names in the region supply a hint of the region's history. Menglers Hill, The Kaiser Stuhl, Gnaddenfrei at Marananga. The district was settled in part by german religious refugees who brought tobacco plants with them with the intention of setting up as growers. It was a failure. Fortunately one of the immigrants brought some vine cuttings with him. The result were beautiful vines bearing abundant fruit. One by one the disillusioned tobacco growers pulled out the dying tobacco plants & planted cuttings from those first few vines.

Their wine was originally made in the german tradition with german names for the produce. For many years white wine in South Australia was either Hock or Moselle. Latterly, the growth of an international wine market has seen the adoption of better known terms & identification with varietal descriptors. When you drink Australian Wine no matter where in the world, there is a chance it came from or was influenced by the Barossa Valley & its heritage.

Only a fool would visit South Australia & not visit the Barossa. Its food, wine, heritage & lifestyle today is a celebration of its history & the unique folk who abide there. Other South Australians often refer to them as Barossa Valley Deutschers. They are unlike no others in SA. Good people to be sure & hospitable to a fault.

Things Teutonic especially wine, small goods, leather work & attitude to living have survived & in fact prospered in the fertile Barossa Valley soil.
