The city of Aqtau ('White Cliff'), formerly Shevchenko, is situated on the east coast of the Caspian Sea. Aqtau hosts a harbour for ferries and cargo ships, an international airport, a train station, quite some western standard hotels, and is characterized by the boasting oil and gas fields in the 'outback' being exploited by Qazaq and western companies.
Most of the town had been built last century by the soviets, and there are overwhelmingly many concrete buildings there.
The most charming place there seems to be the nice beach in summer...
