Ameland is said to be the Wadden's diamond, which is true in a certain sense...
On this island, there is hardly anything to disturb your relaxing peace and quiet, although visitors cars are admitted on the island; their number is regulated even in high season.
On Ameland you will find friendly people in a relaxed environment but you can also enjoy one of the most specific Wadden area vegatations, known as wet dune valleys. Those (and more) contrasts give this island its special charm.
The Oerd is an old vegetated dune area with high dunes and wet dune valleys.
The Hon area at the eastern end of the island, nowadays, is still subject to geological changes: formation of new dunes and ever extending salt marshes. From those high dunes, youll have a very nice panorama of the nearby salt marshes, a preferred birds stop during high tide.
One of the island's special attractions is that from here you can cross the Wadden Sea by low tide, back to Holwerd on the Frisian main land on foot!
