Aix is the ancient capital of the Provence. The roots of the city go back to Roman times.
Right in the heart of the town you find the Cours Mirabeau, shaded by its arch of plane trees, which takes you from La Rotonde to the Fontain du Roi Rene. North of this axis you will find most of the monuments: City Hall, Ancient Archbishopry, Pavillon de Vendôme, Place des Quatre Dauphins, as well as many mansions dating back to the 17-th and 18-th century.
At the north end of the city on the Place de l'Université you find the cathedral St Sauveur an example of the rich Religious heritage of the city.
Aix is also the city of Cezanne. The Musee Granet has 18 works of the great French painters and is a must see.
